2011 Wausau Open
Wausau Whitewater Park, Wausau, WI
Saturday and Sunday, July 9th and 10th, 2011
The 2011 Wausau Open took place over the weekend at the Wausau Whitewater Park in Downtown Wausau. The two-day event featured several of the world's top Junior and Under-23 Kayak and Canoe Slalom Athletes from 6 countries including the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Sweden, and South Africa. The weekends event provided a test run for organizers and racers alike as everyone is preparing for the upcoming Junior and U-23 World Championships to be held here next year. The 2012 Championships will feature approximately 300 athletes from more than 30 countries.
Michal Smolen of North Carolina provided the highlight of the weekend for the U.S., taking home gold in the Junior Men's K1, and finishing second in the Men's K1. Other top American Men finishers included Charlie Kieft, who finished just off the podium in 4th place in the Mens C1 Finals, and Richard Powell who also just missed the podium, in the Men's K1 Final. Another promising young American is Simon Ranagan who had two top 10 finishes in both the Men's K1, and Junior Mens K1 Finals.
Top American finishers on the women's side included Eliza Malakoff, who finished 5th in the Junior Women's K1 Final, and Chelsea Easley who placed 5th in the Junior Women's C1 Final. For complete results, click here to go to the Wausau Whitewater website.
